"Children do not need to be made to learn about the world, or shown how. They want to, and they know how." -John Holt
I swear I will stop taking pictures at the beach unless they capture what I really want to remember. Every trip, I come home with zillions of pics of kids on rocks, kids staring at the ocean, kids with critters, smiley kid faces... you get the picture. Same stuff, different day. A big snore and a hard drive with thousands of forgettable photos. Instead, I'm hoping to observe more and only take a shot when it's really telling our story.
Case in point, the "babies" exploring the rocks together...

Gabe's curly beach hair and the rash guard he feels naked without...

Caden in his easy-to-spot tie dye shirt...

True glee...
In no particular order and for no particular reason...
A tattooed forehead. Another not so easy to remove area...

Sleeping beauties.

Playing in the rain.

Yummy honey and wheat germ covered bananas. A fav.

Laundry before....

laundry after. (Wow, was I really that bored?!)

This next series is Stephen on Manny duty (hard to believe he's actually wearing different shirts in every pic!):

BFF's.

Spring chicken sledding.

Simone demonstrating her top notch Mommy skills...

Gameboying and chick-sitting.

And... the Eye of Smoke.

They grow so fast. Sigh.
Our 3rd annual Easter egg hunt at the Doherty's was highly anticipated.
The search and rescue mission begins...

Then it was back inside to sort whose was whose.
Can't say I know what that face is all about...

Caden didn't understand our genius mastermind of dumping your loot in one big pile and redistributing the eggs to their rightful (and labeled) owners but forgave us when he discovered his favorite candy inside. If it looks like Nerds...

and sounds like Nerds... then it must be Nerds!

Later on, we celebrated Simone's 5 years of age with more genius; Bunny cupcakes! Almost too cute to eat!

Almost...

And finally, Simone garnered quite a few gifts from her generous friends. Pokemon's...

ant farms...

and unique Webkinz to name a few!

And sadly, another year goes by where I didn't get a picture of the spread of food. Turkey tenderloin, I will not soon forget you!
It's tough buying the perfect gift for Simone. If it's not breathing then what's the point? This saturday we got up bright and early to check out a chicken swap and see if we could find a few baby bantam hens for Simone to call her own. Chicks we found, but hens? We have yet to find out... (fingers crossed!)

Meet Peach,

Basil,
and the favorite around here, Fluff.
They are bantam silkies and in time will grow to look something like this funky chicken (except for Peach who is crossed with an unknown parent):

Until then, they are enjoying life in a bin in our living room and being handled around the clock.

Random side note pic: Caden HAD to check out the gigantic tractor/snow plow? at the swap...
"By nature people are learning animals. Birds fly; fish swim; humans think and learn. Therefore, we do not need to motivate children into learning by wheedling, bribing, or bullying. We do not need to keep picking away at their minds to make sure they are learning. What we need to do - and all we need to do - is to give children as much help and guidance as they need and ask for, listen respectfully when they feel like talking, and then get out of the way. We can trust them to do the rest."
John Holt
"In the end, the secret to learning is so simple: Think only about whatever you love. Follow it, do it, dream about it...and it will hit you: learning was there all the time, happening by itself." -Grace Llewellyn
"What we want to see is the child in pursuit of knowledge, not knowledge in pursuit of the child."
George Bernard Shaw
Real, natural learning is in the living. It's in the observing, the questioning, the examining, the pondering, the analyzing, the watching, the reading, the DO-ing, the living, the breathing, the loving, the JOY. It's in the joy. ~Anne Ohman
"How could youth better learn to live than by at once trying the experiment of living?" -Henry D. Thoreau
